Angle Heads
When to Use an Angle Head
An angle head redirects power from a machining-center spindle by 90° or any specified angle, allowing a 3-axis machine to cut the side surfaces and angled faces of a workpiece without flipping it or moving the job to a 5-axis machine. Common applications include side holes or slots in molds, cross holes in valve and pump bodies, and parts that are already located on the machine but still need one side operation without being removed and re-clamped. The benefit is more than time savings: completing the work in one setup preserves concentricity and positional accuracy, preventing tolerances from being re-established during a second setup.
Four Selection Factors
-
Spindle interface (BT/HSK/PSC, etc.) and pull-stud specification
-
Available space at the machining position, which determines whether a standard, extended, or offset type is required
-
Required torque and spindle speed
-
Whether through-tool coolant is required
Mongtec angle heads use a modular interface design. Standard, extended, dual-head, and adjustable-angle models can be configured to suit the machining conditions, and cutting fluid can be delivered through the locating pin for through-tool coolant.
When an Angle Head Is Not Suitable
-
Heavy cutting and high-torque applications, where angle-head rigidity becomes the limiting factor
-
Small-diameter tools requiring very high speed; a hydraulic speed increaser may be more suitable
-
Holes or confined spaces too small for the tool shank to enter; feasibility must be evaluated first
