Spindle speed is the most common bottleneck for small tools: a 2 mm end mill often needs 20,000-30,000 rpm to reach its recommended cutting speed, while most machining-centre spindles top out at 6,000-15,000 rpm. Too little speed means abnormally fast tool wear, a surface finish that will not improve, and longer cycle times

No external power needed: coolant goes in to drive the turbine and comes out flushing the chips, so drive and cooling are done in one pass; the spindle does not turn, so bearing load is lower than with a mechanical unit

Common applications: mould detail machining, engraving, small-hole drilling and thread milling, as well as face milling, drilling, grinding, thread cutting, chamfering and fine engraving

Micro-diameter speed increasers are also available in 0° and 90° types, for Swiss-type, gang-tool and turret lathes

When it is not suitable: if the machine has no through-spindle coolant or the pressure is too low, a pneumatic unit is needed instead; where a long projection is required or the tool diameter is already large, running the spindle directly is more efficient; high coolant temperature or large particles will shorten turbine life
