VDI and BMT Driven Tool Holders

Driven tool holders mount on CNC lathe turrets, allowing milling, drilling, tapping, and side machining in a single setup. The workpiece does not need to be removed and sent to a machining center, eliminating repositioning errors and waiting time. This is especially valuable for small batches and parts with multiple operations—one reason demand for driven tool holders continues to grow as turn-mill machines become more widely used.

Confirm the Turret Interface Before Choosing a Type

Turret interfaces generally fall into two systems: VDI cylindrical-shank holders (DIN ISO 10889; common sizes VDI20／25／30／40／50) and BMT bolt-on holders (BMT45／55／65／75／85). Even among BMT65 systems, the locating method can vary by machine manufacturer. Common Types

Axial (straight): Tool axis parallel to the main spindle; for face drilling and tapping
Radial (90°): Tool axis perpendicular to the main spindle; for side milling and cross drilling
Adjustable-angle: Adjustable within a defined range for angled holes and surfaces
Multi-spindle: Multiple tools in one holder to reduce tool changes
High-speed and internal-coolant: For small-diameter tools or operations requiring through-tool coolant

Three Often-Overlooked Selection Factors

Torque and speed must match the actual cutting conditions—higher is not always better. The coolant method (external, through-tool, or high-pressure) must match the machine configuration. The holder’s gear ratio directly affects the usable speed range; an incorrect choice can significantly shorten tool life.
