Angle Head or 5-Axis? When to Use Which

"Do I buy an angle head for this cross hole, or do I just move to a 5-axis machine?" It is a common fork for 3-axis shops, and the two paths differ in cost by an order of magnitude — while a lot of the time the problem does not need a new machine at all.

The rule of thumb: if your angle is fixed, the number of faces is limited and the batch is steady, an angle head almost always wins. If the angle changes continuously, or one setup has to cover five or more faces, that is where 5-axis belongs.

What problem does an angle head actually solve?

An angle head mounts in the machine spindle and redirects the spindle's rotation sideways (or to a set angle), letting a 3-axis machine perform work that would otherwise need the part laid on its side or re-fixtured: side drilling, side tapping, side slotting, angled features.

What it really saves is not "one more axis" — it is the second setup. Every time a part is turned over and re-clamped you add a location error, plus labour and fixture cost.

When should you use an angle head?

  • The angle is fixed — 90° to the side, or one repeatable angle you run long term

  • Only one or two faces are left — 3-axis covers most of the part and a few side holes remain

  • Access is tight — extended or set-back bodies reach into deep cavities or clear interference

  • Your 3-axis machines still have capacity — no need to occupy (or buy) 5-axis time for a few holes

  • Prototype or small batch — when volume is uncertain, an angle head is a far smaller commitment than a machine

When should you move to 5-axis?

  • The angle varies continuously — impellers, mould surfaces, helical forms, where the tool axis changes along the path. An angle head cannot do this.

  • One setup must cover five or more faces — stopping to swap angle heads for each orientation costs more time than the machine price difference

  • High volume with tight cycle time — setup and head-change time gets multiplied at volume

  • You need maximum rigidity — an angle head adds an overhang and a gear train, so in heavy cutting it is inherently less rigid than cutting straight off the machine spindle

The most common misjudgement is treating "we occasionally need an angled feature" as a reason to buy 5-axis. If it comes up a few months a year, an angle head plus fixturing is usually the better economics.

What angle head types are there?

Mongtec's angle heads use a modular interface design and come in four main types:

  • Standard — general side milling, drilling and tapping

  • Extended — lengthened body for deep cavities and long reach

  • Twin output — two outputs at once, for symmetrical work

  • Adjustable angle — set to any angle, for inclined faces and non-standard angles

There is also a set-back body for clearing interference, which provides through-tool coolant — coolant is routed via the locating pin to the tool centre, which makes a visible difference in deep-hole work and tapping.

What do you need to confirm before ordering?

Like driven tool holders, an angle head is chosen by interface and duty, not by brand. To quote we need:

  • Machine spindle specification (BT30 / BT40 / BT50 / HSK and so on)

  • The angle required (90°? a fixed inclined angle? adjustable?)

  • Operation and tooling (milling / drilling / tapping, shank diameter)

  • Working space constraints — depth or interference issues, which decide extended or set-back bodies

  • Whether through-tool coolant is required

  • Approximate speed and torque requirement

Do angle heads need scheduled maintenance?
