VDI or BMT? A Driven Tool Holder Selection Guide for CNC Lathes

Short answer first: if you want fast tool changes and holders that move between machines, choose VDI. If you want rigidity and stability in heavy cutting, choose BMT.
But that is only the first layer. The situation shops hit far more often is this: the spec sheet says BMT65, the holder arrives, and it will not fit. The reason is not VDI versus BMT — it is the coupling, which is set by the turret manufacturer, not by the machine brand. This article covers both layers.
What is the difference between VDI and BMT?
VDI is a cylindrical shank interface. The holder shank is a toothed cylinder that drops into the turret bore and is clamped from the side by a wedge element, usually with a single screw. The number after VDI is the shank diameter in millimetres — VDI30 is 30 mm, VDI40 is 40 mm, with common sizes running from VDI16 to VDI60.
The interface comes from the German standard DIN 69880. One detail the industry has largely not updated: DIN 69880 has been withdrawn and superseded by the DIN ISO 10889 series (Tool holders with cylindrical shank). The market still says "DIN 69880" everywhere — just know the two refer to the same interface.
BMT is a flat flange interface. The holder bolts directly to a flat face on the turret, located by a key and keyway, normally with four screws. The name originates from Mori Seiki's (now DMG MORI) registered trademark "Built-in Motor Turret"; the industry also commonly reads it as Base Mount Turret.
The practical differences:
Change time — VDI releases with one screw; BMT needs four screws out.
Runout — VDI alignment depends on how carefully the operator sets it; BMT location is defined by the turret keyway, so you get the turret's accuracy as installed.
Rigidity — BMT's flat face contact plus multi-point clamping generally handles heavy cutting better than VDI's single-point clamp.
Interchangeability — VDI is a published standard, so same-size holders cross brands reasonably well. BMT is not an open DIN/ISO standard, which is exactly why BMT holders from different makers do not interchange.
Why does one BMT65 holder not fit another BMT65 machine?
Because the coupling is different.
The flange dimensions can match while the drive connection — the part that transmits power from the turret into the tool — does not. Common couplings include:
DIN 5480 (involute spline)
DIN 1809 (drive tenon)
DIN 5482
TOEM (Baruffaldi system)
HAAS SPUR
MORI SEIKI proprietary
The key idea: the coupling follows the turret manufacturer, not the machine brand. One machine brand may fit different turret makers across its model range, and different machine brands may share a turret maker. So "my machine is brand X" is not enough information to pick a holder part number.
DIN 5480 and DIN 1809 in particular get confused with each other — one is a spline, the other is a tenon, two completely different mechanical principles. We wrote that up separately: DIN 5480 vs DIN 1809.
Radial or axial driven tool holder?
Axial (0°) — tool axis parallel to the spindle, feeding toward the face of the part. Face drilling, tapping, face milling.
Radial (90°) — tool axis perpendicular to the spindle, cutting from the side. Cross drilling, slotting, side milling.
Adjustable-angle and multi-output versions also exist for work that does not fall on either axis.
How do you find the right holder for your machine?
Do not guess from the machine brand. Send us these five data points and we can match it:
Turret type and size — VDI (which size) or BMT (which size)
Turret manufacturer and model — this is the one that decides the coupling
Coupling if you already know it (DIN 5480 / DIN 1809 / DIN 5482 / TOEM / HAAS SPUR / proprietary)
Orientation — axial, radial, or adjustable
Tool interface and duty — ER collet size, shank diameter, coolant through the tool, expected speed and torque
A photo of the turret face and of the existing holder usually settles the remaining questions faster than any drawing.
